“Silica exposure remains a serious threat to many workers across the UK. Crystalline silica has been classified as a human lung carcinogen. Additionally, breathing crystalline silica dust can cause silicosis, which in severe cases can be disabling, or even fatal. The breathable silica dust enters the lungs and causes the formation of scar tissue, thus reducing the lungs’ ability to take in oxygen. There is no cure for silicosis. Since silicosis affects lung function, it makes one more susceptible to lung infections like tuberculosis. In addition, smoking causes lung damage and adds to the damage caused by breathing silica dust.”
Cleaning Method Summary
Restriction of access to the working area to only our authorised personnel during the cleaning process. Access methods used for the cleaning processes will be appropriate to the required work and used by trained and certified operatives only. Our operatives are experienced in using and are suitable for this type of access and cleaning methodology.
Dust control can be achieved using wet cleaning methods, which prevent fine dust from becoming airborne by trapping it in water. Wet cleaning methods may involve mopping, wet brushing or the use of water sprays or hoses. Where water sprays are used, we ensure that water supplies are adequate and that they are maintained. We take extra precautions during cold weather to protect against freezing. When wetting bulk spillages of fine, dry dusty material it is best to use a fine mist. The use of a jet of water will cause dust to become airborne. Where wet cleaning methods are used, electrical installations must be designed with protection against water ingress or these areas must be excluded from the wet cleaning process.
Dust control can be achieved using dry cleaning methods, which involve vacuuming of the dry dust. Industrial vacuum cleaners equipped with high efficiency particulate filters (HEPA filter) or equivalent should be used. We use HEPA filtered Extraction Units that minimise the health risks associated with working in dusty environments. Powerful and portable dust extraction and filtration system with 99.9% extraction rate, twin transformers and anti-static hoses. The advanced filter system is automatically cleaned without interrupting work maximising labour efficiency.
wet cleaning or vacuum cleaning is not possible and only dry cleaning with brushes can be done, we will ensure measures are taken to prevent crystalline silica dust from spreading outside the working area. Full PPE will be work by our team while working on site. This includes disposable or washable clothing and respirators. HEPA filtered vacuums will be used on site. HEPA filters will be used. I have attached the latest H&S guidelines in the cleaning and removal of SCA dust. All our method and risk statement comply with these guidelines and current legislation.
